Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed, he would put his hand—or his garment—over his mouth and lower—or drop—his voice therewith.
Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, and AhmadGradeAuthentic
Explanation
Whenever the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed:
First: He would put his hand or garment over his mouth so that nothing would come out of his mouth or nose and hurt those around him.
Second: He would lower his voice and not raise it.
Benefits
- Demonstrating the Prophet's guidance concerning sneezing and following his example in that.
- It is recommended to put a garment, tissue paper, or the like over one's mouth and nose when sneezing lest something should come out and hurt those around him.
- Lowering the voice while sneezing is required and is a sign of perfect manners and noble morals.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had it not been that I might overburden the believers—or my Ummah—I would have commanded them to use the Siwāk (toothstick) at every prayer."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that if he had not been afraid of making things hard for the believers in his Ummah, he would have made it obligatory upon them to use the Siwāk with every prayer.
Benefits
- The Prophet's compassion towards his Ummah and his fear of making things difficult for them.
- In principle, the Prophet's command indicates obligation unless there is evidence that it is voluntary.
- The recommendation and merit of using the Siwāk at every prayer.
- Ibn Daqīq al-Eid said: The rationale behind the recommendation of using the Siwāk when getting up to pray is that it is a state that brings one closer to Allah, which requires its being a state of perfection and cleanness to highlight the honor of such an act of worship.
- The general indication of the Hadīth includes using the Siwāk by the fasting person even after the sun's decline, as in the case of the Zhuhr and ‘Asr prayers.

Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ), when he performed the Fajr prayer, would remain seated in his prayer place until the sun rose brightly. He said: He would not leave the spot where he prayed Fajr or the Morning prayer until the sun had risen. When the sun rose, he would stand up. During that time, the people would talk about matters from the pre-Islamic days of ignorance; they would laugh and he would smile.
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic
Explanation
It was from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) that when he performed the Fajr prayer, he would remain seated in his prayer place until the sun rose high. He would not leave his place of prayer where he had performed Fajr until the sun had risen. When the sun had risen, he would stand up, and they would begin talking, mentioning some matters from their pre-Islamic days while he remained silent. They would laugh, and he would sometimes smile with them.
Benefits
- It is recommended to engage in remembrance of Allah after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises and to remain in one's place of prayer unless there is a valid excuse.
- This shows the noble character and gentle nature of the Prophet (ﷺ), as he would sit with his Companions, listen to their conversations and stories, and smile at what they shared.
- The permissibility of talking and mentioning events from the pre-Islamic days (Jāhiliyyah) in the mosque.
- The permissibility of laughing and smiling, as what is forbidden is excessive laughter.
