Weigh, and add some more

Abu Safwān Suwayd ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Makhramah al-‘Abdi and I brought some linen garments from Hajar. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and bargained with us for some pants. There was a man present who would weigh merchandise (in scales) for a wage. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Weigh, and add some more."
Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Ad-DaarimiGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

Suwayd ibn Qays and Makhramah al-‘Abdi (may Allah be pleased with him) brought some garments from a town called Hajar to sell them in Madīnah. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon them) went to buy lower garments from them. He bargained with them over the price (An-Nasā’i's narration says: "and he bought lower garments from us", without mentioning the bargaining). In the market, there was a man who had scales to weigh goods in return for a fee. As he was weighing the goods, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Weigh, and add some more." He ordered the man to add some more to the side of the scales that held the merchandise so that it would be heavier than the other. This does not mean that the difference in weight would be great and might harm the seller. There should be a slight difference so that the buyer can be certain (and clearly see) that he has taken his full right without any deficiency.

It is better for one of you to take his rope, go out and gather a bundle of firewood on his back, sell it, and thereby Allah preserves his dignity, than to ask people—whether they give him or withhold from him

Az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is better for one of you to take his rope, go out and gather a bundle of firewood on his back, sell it, and thereby Allah preserves his dignity, than to ask people—whether they give him or withhold from him."
Narrated by Al-BukhāriGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained that a person should do any kind of work—even if it means taking a rope, collecting firewood, carrying it on his back, and selling it—so that he can eat from it, give in charity from it, and remain independent of others, protecting his dignity from the humiliation of begging. This is better for him than asking people—whether they give to him or not—because begging brings disgrace, while the believer is honorable and not humiliated.

Benefits
  1. An exhortation to avoid begging and to uphold one's dignity by refraining from it.
  2. Encouragement to work to earn a living, even if the job is simple or viewed as lowly in the eyes of people.
  3. Islam combats begging and idleness; therefore, it makes striving and working obligatory, even if the work is difficult, such as gathering firewood.
  4. Begging is not permissible for one who is able to work and earn a living.
  5. Asking the ruler is permissible in cases of genuine need, as Allah Almighty says: {Nor is there any blame on those who came to you asking you for mounts to take them along, and you said, “I can find no mounts for you;” they turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears out of grief that they had nothing to spend.} [Surat at-Tawbah: 92]
  6. Whoever is compelled by necessity to ask and is unable to earn through work or even gather firewood is permitted to ask—but without insistence or persistence, as Allah Almighty says: {They do not ask people importunately.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 273]
  7. An-Nawawi said: It contains encouragement to give in charity, to eat from what one earns with his own hands, and to seek a livelihood through lawful means.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) bought a camel from him, and he weighed out (the price) and paid him more than his due

عن جابر رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اشْتَرَى منه بَعِيراً، فَوَزَنَ له فَأرْجَح.
Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) bought a camel from him, and he weighed out (the price) and paid him more than his due.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

There is a story behind this Hadīth, and it is mentioned here in brief. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) bought a camel from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him). "And he weighed out for him," meaning: the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) weighed the price of the camel. This is said figuratively, since the one who did the weighing in the Hadīth was Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him) upon orders from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) as stated in the original Hadīth: "So he ordered Bilāl to weigh for me an Uqiyyah (unit of weight) and he weighed it for me, giving me more than its price." That means he paid Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) more than his due. They used to deal with money by weight not by units, although sometimes they used it by units, but mostly by weight.

Beware of excessive swearing (by Allah) in sale transactions, for it sells (the goods) then erases (the blessing)

Abu Qatādah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Beware of excessive swearing (by Allah) in sale transactions, for it sells (the goods) then erases (the blessing)."
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

Beware of swearing too much when buying and selling, even if you are truthful, because excessive swearing most likely leads to lying. For example, a person should not say: "By Allah, I bought it for one-hundred," even if he is saying the truth. If he said: "By Allah, I bought it for one hundred," while he bought it for eighty, then this is even worse, because he is lying and, at the same time, swearing in a sale, which was forbidden by the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He informed us that though swearing oaths in buying and selling is a means for selling goods, Allah, the Almighty, then removes the blessing from the sale transaction because it is based on disobedience to the Messenger of Allah, and disobedience to him amounts to disobedience to Allah, the Almighty.
