Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers. If they were to know the virtue of them, they would come to them, even if they had to crawl. I have almost intended to order for the prayer to be established, and appoint a man to lead the people in prayer, and then I would go along with some men having bundles of firewood, to the people who are not attending the prayer and burn their houses upon them with fire."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) tells about the hypocrites and their laziness when it comes to attending the prayer, especially the 'Ishā' and Fajr prayers, and that if they were to know the amount of reward for attending them along with the Muslim congregation, they would come to it even if they had to crawl like infants upon their hands and knees.
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) thought of ordering the prayer to be commenced and appointing someone to lead the people in prayer instead of him. Then he would go, along with people carrying firewood, to men who were not attending the congregational prayer and burn their houses with fire, given the gravity of their sin in doing so. Yet, he did not do that because the houses contained women, innocent children, and others with valid excuses for not attending the prayer - for they committed no sin.
Benefits
- The graveness of the failure to attend the congregational prayer in the mosque.
- The hypocrites would seek nothing out of their worship but show-off and reputation, for they would only attend prayers when people could see them.
- The reward for offering the ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers in the congregation is great, and they are worthy of being attended even if people have to crawl.
- Regularly attending the ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers protects from hypocrisy, and the failure to participate in them is one of the traits of the hypocrites.

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his travels, and on the way the provisions became very scarce. ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy said: "Do not spend on those with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) until they disband." He also said: "If we return to Madīnah, surely the more honorable will expel therefrom the more humble." I went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of what he had said. So he sent for ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy, who denied it and swore that he did not say that. The people started saying: "Zayd lied to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." I was hurt by what they said: until Allah, the Almighty, revealed that I had told the truth in the verses: {If the hypocrites come to you...} [Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn] Later, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) invited them (the hypocrites) to ask for forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads aside (in rejection)."
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
What he meant by the more honorable was himself and his people, and by that Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) recounts that he was traveling with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and there were believers and hypocrites with him. During the journey, the people were suffering severe distress due to a lack of provisions. ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl (the head of disbelief and hypocrisy) spoke to the people, saying: {Do not spend on those with the Messenger of Allah until they disband} [Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn: 7]. What he meant was: do not give them any money, so they would suffer hunger and therefore disband and leave the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He also said: {If we return to Madīnah, surely the more honorable will expel therefrom the more humble} [Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn: 8], meaning the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). When Zayd ibn Arqam heard what Ibn Salūl said: He went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of what ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl had said to warn him of his evil. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Ibn Salūl, who swore emphatically that he had not said those things. This is the habit of the hypocrites; they can swear a false oath knowing that they are lying. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to accept their overt (deeds) and leave their covert (intentions) to Allah to judge. When Zayd ibn Arqam heard that Ibn Salūl had sworn that he had never made those statements, he was deeply distressed, because the man had sworn and taken an oath before the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). The people said: "Zayd ibn Arqam lied to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." However, soon Allah, the Almighty, exonerated Zayd and showed him to have been truthful through the verses of Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then invited the hypocrites and their chief, ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubayy, to ask Allah for forgiveness for them for the foul statements they had made. They rejected his invitation in arrogance and in contempt of the fact that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was seeking forgiveness for them from Allah, the Almighty.

Al-Layth ibn Sa‘d (one of the narrators of the Hadīth) said: "These two men were from the hypocrites."
Narrated by BukhariGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed her about two men and mentioned that they knew nothing about Islam, because they were showing Islam and hiding their disbelief. The fact that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned these two men in their absence is not considered backbiting, which is forbidden; rather, it is necessary to disclose their reality, so that people who do not know them would not be deceived by their apparent status. The Prophet's statement in this context implies certainty, because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was in fact aware of the hypocrites through revelation from Allah in Sūrat At-Tawbah. Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to call Sūrat At-Tawbah "Al-Fādihah" (the exposing chapter). Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The verses continued to be revealed and exposing the hypocrites until we were worried (lest we should be counted among them)."

Abu Mas‘ūd ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr al-Ansāri al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: 'When the verse of charity was revealed, we would carry loads on our backs (in return for money that we can give for charity). A man came and gave so much in charity, so they said: ‘He is showing off.’ Another man came and gave a Sā‘ in charity, so they said: ‘Allah is no need for the Sā‘ of that one.’ Then it was revealed: {Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort.} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 79]
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
Abu Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Qur'anic verse encouraging charity was revealed, referring to the following verse according to Al-Hāfizh: {Take charity from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 103], the Companions raced to submit their charities to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) carrying as much as they could. Some people submitted large amounts; others small amounts. The hypocrites criticized both, accusing the former of ostentation and the latter of being unworthy in Allah's sight. Therefore, Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment} [Sūrat At-Tawbah: 79]. They mocked the believers, so they will be mocked and tormented by Allah.

Explanation
It was reported that some people came to ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: When we enter upon our rulers, we tell them things, but when we leave them, we say something else. Thereupon, Ibn ‘Umar said: We used to consider this hypocrisy during the lifetime of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). That is because they failed to speak the truth and betrayed their duty to offer sincere advice. Indeed, anyone who meets the people in authority, be they rulers, ministers, presidents, or kings, is required to speak the truth as it is.

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Our Lord will reveal His Shin, and then all believers, men and women, will prostrate themselves before Him, but there will remain those who used to prostrate in the worldly life for showing off and gaining good reputation. Such people will try to prostrate (in that situation) but their backs will be as stiff as if it is one bone (a single vertebra)."
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Lord, Glorified and Exalted, will reveal His noble Shin on the Day of Judgment, and every believer, male and female, will prostrate to Him. As for the hypocrites who used to prostrate to Allah in the worldly life so as to be seen by people, they will not be able to prostrate because their backs will be made of one vertebra or one straight bone. They will not be able to bend nor prostrate, because they did not really prostrate to Allah in the worldly life, rather they only prostrated to their worldly purposes. It is not permissible to interpret Allah's Shin as hardship, distress and so on. Rather it is obligatory to affirm this attribute for Allah, the Almighty, without asking 'how', and without drawing resemblance or similitude, and without stripping it of its true meaning.

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The majority of the hypocrites of this Ummah are its reciters."
Narrated by AhmadGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Hadīth contains criticism of the reciters of the Qur’an who misinterpret it and misapply it or memorize the Qur’an as a means of dissimulation and to avert suspicion away from themselves. However, they do not act according to the Qur’an and their beliefs are contrary to it. The Hadīth states that these reciters are the majority of the hypocrites of this Ummah (community). Some scholars stated that the Hadīth refers to hypocrisy of actions, and not belief. This is because a hypocrite outwardly shows belief in Allah and hides his disbelief in order to protect his life and property. Likewise, the reciter outwardly shows by his actions that he wants the reward of the Hereafter, while he hides the fact that he wants to be praised by people and gain worldly benefit. Therefore, the reciter and the hypocrite are similar in that their internal state contradicts their external state.

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hypocrite is like a ewe which goes to and fro between two flocks: going once to one and another time to the other."
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) demonstrated the condition of the hypocrite and likened him to a hesitant ewe that does not know which one of the two flocks of sheep it should follow. It goes to one flock one time and to the other flock another time. Hypocrites are confused between belief and disbelief. They are not with the believers inwardly and outwardly, neither are they with the disbelievers inwardly and outwardly. Rather, they are outwardly with the believers and inwardly in doubt and hesitation. They incline to the believers at times and to the disbelievers at other times.
Benefits
- It was the Prophet's (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) approach to provide parables to make meanings clear and easy to understand.
- The Hadīth highlights the hypocrites' hesitancy, doubt, and instability.
- It warns of the condition of the hypocrites and urges us to be truthful and determined in faith, both inwardly and outwardly.
