Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: I memorized from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ten Rak‘ahs (units of prayer): two Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two Rak‘ahs after it, two Rak‘ahs after Maghrib at his home, two Rak‘ahs after ‘Ishā’ at his home, and two Rak‘ahs before the Fajr prayer, an hour when none was allowed to enter upon the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Hafsah told me that after the muezzin would make Adhān (call to prayer) and after the break of dawn, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two Rak‘ahs. Another wording reads: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two Rak‘ahs after the Friday prayer.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim with all its versionsGradeAuthentic
Explanation
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) clarifies that some of the voluntary prayers he memorized from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) were ten Rak‘ahs, which are called "As-Sunan ar-Rawātib" (regular Sunnah prayers). They are: two Rak‘ahs before Zhuhr and two after it, two Rak‘ahs after Maghrib at his home, two Rak‘ahs after ‘Ishā’ at his home, and two Rak‘ahs before Fajr, and these are ten Rak‘ahs in total. As for the Friday prayer, he used to offer two Rak‘ahs after it.
Benefits
- It is recommended to perform the mentioned Rawātib (regular Sunnah prayers) on a regular basis.
- It is permissible to perform the Sunnah prayer at home.

Al-Barā ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey and he performed the ‘Ishā prayer, reciting in one of the two Rak‘ahs Sūrat At-Tīn. I have never heard anyone with a better voice or recitation than his.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) recited Sūrat At-Tīn, which is a short Sūrah, in the first Rak‘ah of the ‘Ishā prayer, because he was on a journey. While traveling, one should be keen on making things easier because of the hardship of traveling. Even though the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, he didn't abandon what evokes humility and attentiveness of the heart in prayer when listening to the Qur'an, which is beautifying one's voice with the recitation of the Qur'an in prayer.

Abdullah ibn Mālik ibn Buhaynah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, he used to spread out his hands until the whiteness of his armpits would be visible.
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
When prostrating, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to spread out his hands during Sujūd (prostration), keeping each hand away from its respective side like the two wings, until the skin color of his armpits would become visible. This is a form of exaggeration in distancing the arms and keeping them far from his sides.
Benefits
- This posture, in which one keeps his upper arms away from his sides, is recommended in Sujūd.
- It is not permissible for the one praying behind the Imam to adopt the Mujāfāh posture (keeping the arms quite distant from the sides) if this annoys the one praying next to him.
- Mujāfāh in Sujūd has many rationales and benefits, some of which are: displaying activeness and interest in prayer; and when resting on all of the body parts involved in Sujūd, each part will take its share of worship. It was also said: The rationale behind this is that it resembles humility more and enables one to place his forehead and nose on the ground in a more proper manner, and it also allows each body part to be involved apart from other parts.

Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) once said: I will do my best to lead you in prayer just as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer, so that you may follow his model and pray as he used to. Thābit al-Bunāni said: Anas used to beautify and perfect his prayer in a way that I have not seen any of you doing. That is he used to prolong the standing after bowing, as well as the sitting after prostration. A person seeing him in either position would think that he had forgotten to change posture.

Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would visit the mosque of Qubā riding or walking, then he would pray there two Rak‘ahs.
In another narration: "The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would go to the mosque of Qubā every Saturday riding or walking, and Ibn ‘Umar would do so as well.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim with its two versionsGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Qubā' region, where the first mosque of Islam was built, is a town near the center of Madīnah in its ‘Awāli district. The Prophet would visit this place either riding or walking. The words "every Saturday" means that he would designate certain days for visiting it.
The wisdom behind him visiting Qubā' on Saturday of every week was to maintain relations with the Ansāris and to see how they were doing, as well as those who stayed behind of attending the Friday prayer with him. This is the reason why the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) designated Saturday for their visit.

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I prayed with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) once at night and he started reciting Sūrat al-Baqarah. I thought that he would bow in Rukū‘ at the end of one hundred verses, but he continued. I thought that he would probably recite it (this Sūrah only) in one Rak‘ah, but he continued. I thought he would perhaps bow in Rukū‘ on completing (this Sūrah). He then started reciting Sūrat An-Nisā’ and read it all, then he started reciting Sūrat Āl-‘Imrān and read it all. He recited slowly; when he came across a verse of Tasbīh (glorifying Allah), he would glorify Him, and when he came come across a verse of requesting Allah (something), he would request it from Him, and when he came across a verse of seeking refuge (with Allah), he would seek refuge (with Him). Then he bowed in Rukū‘ and said: "Glory be to our Lord, the Most Great". His bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing. Upon rising from Rukū‘, he said: "Allah listens to he who praises Him; praise be to You, Our Lord!" He then remained standing about the same length of time as he had spent in bowing. He then prostrated and said: "Gory be to our Lord, the Most High", and his prostration lasted nearly the same length of time as his standing.
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
Hudhayfa once stood up with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) praying after his prayer; so he lengthened the prayer; because he recited in one Rak‘ah Sūrat al-Baqarah, then Sūrat An-Nisā', then Sūrat Āl-Imrān. While reciting whenever he was passing by a verse of request, he would request Allah; with a verse of glorification, he would glorify Allah; with the verse of refuge-seeking, he would seek refuge with Allah. So, his prayer was consistent in the length; The Rukū‘ was near the length of standing, and the prostration was near the length of bowing.

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to sleep at the beginning of the night and rise at its end to pray.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to sleep at the beginning of night, after praying the ‘Ishā' and would pray Qiyām at the end of the night, which is the second third of night. After finishing his prayer, he used to return to his bed and sleep, and that would be at the last sixth of the night to take some rest after the hard Qiyām. This sleep is also useful to restore one's energy for the Fajr prayer and the morning supplications. With this sleep, one wakes up refreshed. No one will discern that he was doing extra worship at night. Thus, ostentation on part of the worshiper would be out of the question. For this reason, the first call to the Fajr prayer is meant to wake up those who are asleep to pray the Witr if they have not done so and to urge those who are praying to take some rest in order to restore their energy.
