Forbidden Marriages

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Shighār marriage

عن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما : «أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن الشِّغَارِ».
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Shighār marriage. Shighār marriage means that a man gives his daughter in marriage to another on condition that the other gives his daughter to him in marriage without any dower being paid by either.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The basic principle in a marriage contract is that it is not fulfilled unless it includes a dowry for the woman which she receives in return for offering herself to her husband (for sexual enjoyment). For this reason, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited this type of pre-Islamic marriage called Shighār, by which the guardians used to wrong women under their care. They would marry off the women under their care without a dowry which benefits the women. Rather, they used those women for fulfilling their own desires and lusts by giving the woman under their care in marriage to a husband, in return for marrying the woman under the care of that husband without a dowry as well. This type of marriage involves injustice, because the guardians make their womenfolk lawful to men in a way other than that legislated by Allah. Anything of this sort is impermissible and invalid.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the fixed term marriage on the Day of Khaybar and eating the flesh of domestic donkeys

عن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه «أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن نكاح المتعة يوم خيبر، وعن لحوم الحُمُرِ الأهلية».
‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the fixed term marriage on the Day of Khaybar and eating the flesh of domestic donkeys.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The objective of marriage in Islam is to establish a continuous relationship based on affection and to build a family. Islam has prohibited some forms of marriages that contradict this objective. For this reason, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Mut‘ah (fixed term) marriage at the time of the battle of Khaybar. This form of marriage, in which a man marries a women for a certain period of time, was made permissible at the beginning of Islam because there was a necessity for it. Similarly, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited consumption of domestic donkeys that are possessed and taken care of by other people, unlike the wild donkeys.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) allowed temporary marriage for three nights in the year of the battle of Awtās, then he forbade it

عن إياس بن سلمة، عن أبيه، قال: «رَخَّصَ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عَامَ أَوْطَاسٍ، في المُتْعَة ثلاثا، ثم نَهَى عنها».
Iyās ibn Salamah reported that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) allowed temporary marriage for three nights in the year of the battle of Awtās, then he forbade it.”
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

Allah, the Almighty, prescribed marriage for the purpose of unity, survival, affability, and building a family. Hence, any condition or intent contradicting such a rationale is invalid. Accordingly, temporary marriage is forbidden. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) allowed temporary marriage over three nights only in the year of the battle of Awtās (Shawwāl, in the year 8 AH) out of necessity, then he forbade it eternally given the evil consequences that it involves. Reasons for prohibiting temporary marriage in Islam include: 1. Mixing up of lineages. 2. Subjecting people's private parts to renting. 3. Contradicting the sound behavior and upright human nature.
