Rulings of Water

No one of you should urinate in stagnant water then take a ritual bath with it

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one of you should urinate in stagnant water then take a ritual bath with it." Another narration reads: "No one of you should take a ritual bath in stagnant water while being in the state of major ritual impurity."
Narrated by Muslim - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Muslims from urinating in stagnant water, which is not running, because doing that would cause it to be polluted with impurities and microbes that the urine might be carrying. This, in turn, will harm those who use such water. In addition to that, the one who urinates in stagnant water may use it himself in taking a ritual bath. So, it is not logical to urinate in the water that he will, later on, use in purifying himself. Moreover, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the one in the state of major ritual impurity from taking a ritual bath in stagnant water, because that causes the water to be polluted with the filth and impurities of the ritual state.

Its water is purifying, and its dead animals are lawful

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), saying: O Messenger of Allah, we travel by sea, and we carry with us a little water. If we make ablution with it, we will be thirsty. Can we make an ablution with the seawater? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Its water is purifying, and its dead animals are lawful."
Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasā’i, Ibn Mājah, and AhmadGradeAuthentic
Explanation

A man asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), saying: We travel by sea for fishing, trade, and the like, and we carry with us a small amount of potable water. If we use the drinking water for making ablution and Ghusl (ritual bath), it will run out and we will find nothing to drink. So, is it permissible for us to make ablution using seawater? Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said about the seawater: Its water is pure and purifying, so it is permissible to use it for ablution and Ghusl; and it is lawful to eat what comes out of it, including fish, whales, and others, even if found dead and floating on its surface without being fished.

Benefits
  1. The dead animals of the sea, i.e., what dies therein of the animals that only live in the sea, are lawful.
  2. Providing the questioner with more information than what he requested to complete the benefit.
  3. If there is a change in the taste, color, or smell of water due to something pure, it remains purifying as long as the water retains its original entity, even if there is an increase in its saltiness, hotness, coldness, or the like.
  4. The seawater eliminates the states of major and minor ritual impurities and removes the material impurity that affects what is pure, such as the human body, a garment, or anything else.

Water is pure and nothing makes it impure

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Can we perform ablution from the well of Budā‘ah, which is a well into which menstrual pads, dead dogs and stinky things are thrown?" He replied: "Water is pure and nothing makes it impure."
An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by AhmadGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that pure water does not become impure once impure things are thrown in it, as long as its color, taste or smell do not change.

If the water is two pitchers, it will bear no impurity

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about water that is frequented by animals and beasts of prey, and he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the water is two pitchers, it will bear no impurity."
Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasā’i, Ibn Mājah, and AhmadGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the ruling on the purity of the water that is frequented by animals and beasts of prey to drink from it and the like. He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the amount of water can fill two big pitchers, i.e., 210 liters, then it is a big amount of water that does not become impure unless one of its three characteristics, namely its color, taste, and smell, is changed because of some impurity.

Benefits
  1. Water becomes impure in case there is a change in one of its three characteristics, namely its color, taste, and smell, because of some impurity. The Hadīth here applies to the majority of cases and is not meant to be specific.
  2. Scholars have unanimously agreed that if water is changed by impurity, it becomes generally impure, regardless of its amount.

Water is not affected by Janābah

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: One of the Prophet's wives bathed with water placed in a large bowl. Then, the Prophet went to use this water in making ablution or taking a ritual bath, so she said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, I was in a state of Janābah." So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water is not affected by Janābah."
Narrated by Ibn Majah - Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu DaoudGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

One of the Prophet's wives took a ritual bath with water placed in a large bowl. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went to make ablution or take a ritual bath with the water left over from his wife's bathing. She told him that she was in a state of Janābah when she used that water, so he instructed her that water is not affected by that, and that it retains its characteristics of being pure in itself and purifying of what is washed with it.
