Manners of Calling to Allah

2 ḥadīths

Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us a reminder every Thursday

Shaqīq ibn Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) reported: Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us a reminder every Thursday. A man said to him: "O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahmān, we would like for you to give us a reminder every day!" He said: "What prevents me from doing so is that I dislike to bore you. I give you an admonition every now and then, just as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was giving them to us, out of fear that we might become bored."

Explanation

Shaqīq ibn Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) reported that Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give them an admonition every Thursday. So a man told him that they wished that he would give them an admonition every day. He told them that what prevented him from doing so was his fear that they would become bored and annoyed; and that he was committed to giving them admonitions, yet he would examine their needs (and give them accordingly); just as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to do with them, for fear that they would become bored. Definitely, boredom causes the admonition to have no effect.

I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) while he was giving a sermon

Abu Rifā‘ah Tamīm ibn Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) while he was giving a sermon, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, a stranger (meaning himself) has come to inquire about his religion. He is quite ignorant about his religion." So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) interrupted his sermon and came to me. A chair was brought for him and he sat on it and started teaching me of what Allah has taught him. Then he resumed his sermon and completed it.

Explanation

An aspect of the humility of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is shown when a man came to him while he was delivering a sermon and told him that he was a stranger who wished to learn about the religion. The Prophet gave him attention; he stopped his sermon and walked toward him. Then he was brought a chair to sit on, and he started teaching the man, because this man came with a desire to learn his religion in order to act upon it. After teaching him, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) continued his sermon.
