The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned men against letting their garments, which cover the lower part of their body, whether a robe, trousers, or anything else, hang below their ankles. Whatever is below the ankles of the one whose garment is trailing will be in the Fire as a punishment for him for this action.
- The prohibition of lengthening the garment to extend below the ankles for men, and that is one of the major sins.
- Ibn Hajar said: An exception for letting the Izār (lower garment) trail applies to anyone who does so out of necessity, such as someone with a wound in his ankles, for example, that would be harmed by flies if not covered by his lower garment, especially when he has no other option.
- This ruling is specific to men, as women have been commanded to let their garments hang below the ankles, extending to the length of a forearm.
