The library’s card on travel, with the comparison done for you: choose your school and enter how far the journey is.

Every rule here is the card’s, as it prints it. It does not say how long a stay ends a journey: ask a scholar.

07Travel & missed prayers
Qaṣr
Dhuhr, ‘Aṣr and ‘Ishā’ become two rak‘ahs. Ḥanafī: a journey of about 48 miles / 78 km; the others: roughly two marḥalah, about 80 km. Ḥanafī: shortening is required; the others: it is a concession.
Qur’ān 4:101; Bukhārī, Muslim
Jam‘ — combining
Dhuhr with ‘Aṣr, Maghrib with ‘Ishā’, permitted in travel, illness, or hardship by the Shāfi‘ī, Mālikī and Ḥanbalī schools. The Ḥanafī school permits it only at ‘Arafah and Muzdalifah.

Sunnah in travel
Drop the regular Sunnah rak‘ahs of Dhuhr, Maghrib and ‘Ishā’; keep the two of Fajr and the Witr.
Bukhārī, Muslim · ṣaḥīḥ
Missed prayers
Pray it as soon as you remember — “there is no expiation for it but that.” Make them up in order where you can, alongside the current prayers.
Bukhārī, Muslim · ṣaḥīḥ
