Prophet's Humility

7 ḥadīths

Verily, Allah has made me a noble slave, not an obstinate tyrant

‘Abdullāh ibn Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had a large bowl called Al-Gharrā', which needed four men to carry it. One day, when they finished their Duha prayer, that bowl was brought full of bread sopped in broth, and they sat down around it. When their number increased, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) knelt down (sat on his knees, resting on his feet). A Bedouin said: "What sort of sitting is that!" Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, Allah has made me a noble slave, not an obstinate tyrant." Then he said: "Eat from the sides of the bowl and leave the center so that your food would be blessed."
Narrated by Ibn Majah - Narrated by Abu DaoudGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had a big bowl to serve food in called Al-Gharrā' that four men used to carry. One day, when the Companions finished performing their Duha prayer, Al-Gharrā' was brought full of bread sopped in broth, and they sat down around it. When their number increased and the circle around the bowl became too narrow to accommodate everyone, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat down on his knees resting on his feet to make room for his brothers. A Bedouin said to him in amazement: "What is this way of sitting, O Messenger of Allah," because of the humility it involved. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, Allah has made me a noble slave through prophet-hood and knowledge, and He has not made me an obstinate tyrant." The Prophet was indeed neither arrogant nor despotic. Then he said to the Companions: "Eat from the sides of the bowl and leave its center," explaining that this is a reason to attain blessing in food.

A slave girl of Madīnah would take hold of the hand of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and would take him wherever she wished

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A slave girl of Madīnah would take hold of the hand of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and would take him wherever she wished.
Narrated by BukhariGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

This Hadīth highlights the extreme humbleness of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) though he is the best of creation. Any slave girl from Madīnah who sought his help would go to him, take his hand, and take him wherever she wished so he could help her with what she needed. This would happen even though he was the best of mankind. He would not ask her: "Where are you taking me?" or say: "Go to someone else," instead, he would go with her and help her with her need. Nevertheless, Allah raised him through this in status and honor. Note: The intended meaning in this Hadīth is not that the slave girl actually touched the hand of the Prophet in the physical sense. Al-Hāfiz said: “’Taking his hand’ is intended to mean that he accompanied her with gentleness and willingness.” This Hadīth reflects the Prophet's humbleness on several levels, as it mentioned that it was a female who took his hand, not a male, and it was a slave, not a free woman, and it used the indefinite article to indicate that this could happen with any slave girl, whoever she was.

If I am invited to a meal of a sheep's trotter or arm, I would accept the invitation

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I am invited to a meal of a sheep's trotter or arm, I would accept the invitation, and if an arm or trotter were gifted to me, I would accept the gift."
Narrated by BukhariGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

This Hadīth is an indication of the Prophet's exemplary manners and humility, as well as his keenness to avoid hurting people's feelings by accepting their gifts even if they are seemingly insignificant, and by answering their invitation to their houses even if he knew that the meal he was invited to was humble. Because the reason behind accepting a gift and accepting an invitation is to pleasing the host and strengthening love and friendship, while refusing a gift or not accepting an invitation creates repulsion and hatred, and its humbleness should not be looked down upon. The sheep's arm (shoulder) and trotter (foot and calf) were specifically mentioned to combine between the worthless part and the best part, as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) liked the shoulder meat more than any other part of the sheep, while the foot has no value. So, the value of the gift or meal was of no importance to him.
