Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) never said: "No" to anyone who asked him for something.
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Never was the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked for anything by someone who was about to accept Islam but that he gave it to them. A man came to him and asked for alms, so he gave him a number of sheep (so large that they filled the space) between two mountains. So the man returned to his people and told them: "O my people, embrace Islam, for Muhammad gives lavishly like someone who does not fear any poverty." Some people would embrace Islam only for worldly gains, but Islam soon became dearer to them than the whole world and all what is in it.

Explanation
Hadīth explanation: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would never say 'no' to anyone who asked him for worldly provisions. Rather, if he had what he was asked for, he would give it to him. If he didn’t have it he would say kind words to him, in compliance with Allah's command: {And as for the beggar, do not scold him} [Sūrat Ad-Duha: 10]. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was very merciful, and no one came to him asking for something except that he promised to give him and carried out that promise if he had something to give."
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) so he sent a messenger to his wives (to bring something for the man to eat), but they said that they had nothing except water. Thereupon, he said: "Who will take this (man) as a guest?" In another narration, Sahl ibn Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A woman brought a cloak to the Prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have knitted this with my own hands for you to wear." So the Prophet took it and he was in need of it, and he came out to us wearing it. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, give it to me to wear." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Yes', and sat with us. Later when he returned home, he folded the cloak and sent it to the man. The people said to the man: "It was not good of you to ask him for it when you know that he never turns down anyone's request." The man said: "By Allah, I only asked him for it so that it would be my shroud when I die." And it was (indeed) his shroud when he died.
These are examples of how the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was with anyone who asked him for something. If he had something to give, he would give it, even if it belonged to him or he needed it. If he did not have anything to give, he would apologize or promise to give him later, or he would ask his Companions if one of them could give him. This is an indication of his great generosity, munificence, and excellent manners.

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Some people from the Ansār asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) for charity and he gave them. They asked him again, and he gave them until there was nothing left. Thereupon, he said to them: "Whatever good I have, I will not withhold from you. Whoever tries to be chaste, Allah will make him chaste; whoever tries to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient; whoever tries to be patient, Allah will make him patient. No one is granted a gift better and ampler than patience."

Explanation
Some people from the Ansār asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) for alms and he gave them. They asked him again and he gave them until he had nothing left. He told them that he would not withhold anything from them. He urged them to be chaste, self-sufficient, and patient. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed them that anyone who is satisfied with the divine blessings, without need for people, Allah makes him rich. Indeed, richness is in the heart. With self-sufficiency, one needs nothing from others. Also, being chaste, one earns divine protection for oneself and one's spouse. Finally, anyone who tries to be patient, Allah grants him patience, for there is nothing better than patience.

Sahl ibn Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with a woven mantle and said: "I have woven it with my hands for you to wear." So the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took it as he was in need of it. He came out to us wearing it as his lower garment. Someone said: "How beautiful! Give it to me to wear!" He answered: "Yes." Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sat there for some time. When he returned home, he folded it and sent it to the man. People said to him: "You have not done well by asking him for it when you know that he never turns down anybody's request and the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wore it for he was in need of it." He said: "By Allah, I did not ask him for it in order to wear it; I only asked him for it so that it would be my shroud." Sahl said: "And it was his shroud."
Al-Bukhari with a similar wordingGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Hadīth shows altruism of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and how he preferred that man to have the mantle although he himself was in need of it. The fact that he actually wore it indicates that he was in extreme need of it. A woman came and gave the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) a mantle as a gift. Then a man approached the Prophet and said: 'How beautiful it is!" and asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to give it to him. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took it off, folded it, and gave it to him. Some Hadīth commentators mentioned that one of the lessons learned from this Hadīth is that it is permissible to seek blessings from the traces of the righteous. However, that is not the case. Rather, it is seeking the blessings specifically from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and none else can be compared to him in terms of virtue and righteousness. Also, the Companions never did that with anyone except the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) neither during his lifetime nor after his death. Had there been any good in it, they would have preceded us in doing it.

Explanation
When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the battle of Hunayn - a valley between Makkah and Taif - and Jubair ibn Mut‘im was with him, some Bedouins grabbed him and began to demand their shares. They forced him to the Samrah tree (a thorny tree), and his cloak became entangled in the tree's thorns, and they were pulling at him. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give my cloak back to me. Were I to have camels or cows or sheep equal to the number of these thorny trees, I would distribute them all among you. If you were to try me, you would not find me a miser, a liar, or a coward."

Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) divided money that he received among some people and gave nothing to others. So ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Shouldn't you give those whom you have not given, since they are more deserving than those who were given? The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) answered: They were persistent in their demand (to get a share) because of their weak faith. Their situation made me choose between their recourse to importunate demanding or to calling me a miser (for not giving them). So he chose to give them since miserliness was not one of his traits, and also to appease them and win their hearts in favor of Islam.

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people, and he used to be more generous than ever in Ramadan when Gabriel (Jibrīl) would meet him. He used to meet him every night during Ramadan to revise the Qur'an with him. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was more generous than the fast wind.
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people, and his generosity was more intense in the month of Ramadan when he would give what was appropriate to those who were worthy of that. His increased generosity was caused by two things:
First: His meeting with Gabriel (peace be upon him).
Second: Revising the Qur’an, which is to recite it by heart.
Gabriel (peace be upon him) would revise all that was revealed of the Qur’an with him. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was more generous, more giving, more intense in doing good, and faster in bringing benefit to the people than a good wind sent by Allah with rain and mercy.
Benefits
- The Hadīth shows the Prophet's extreme generosity, especially during Ramadan, the month of extensive worship and goodness.
- It urges us to be generous at all times, and we are recommended to be more generous during the month of Ramadan.
- We should engage more in generosity, giving, benevolence, and recitation of the Qur’an during the month of Ramadan.
- One of the means of preserving knowledge is to revise it with the seekers of knowledge and the scholars.
