Jumu‘ah (Friday) Prayer

16 ḥadīths

If you say to your companion 'listen' on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon, you have thus engaged in idle talk

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you say to your companion 'listen' on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon, you have thus engaged in idle talk."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) points out that one of the ethics that should be observed by those who attend the Friday sermon is to listen to the preacher to ponder over the delivered lessons and that whoever speaks - albeit the least of words - while the Imām is giving the sermon and tells someone to "keep silent" or to 'listen' has thus missed the merit of the Friday prayer.

Benefits
  1. It is prohibited to speak while listening to the sermon, even to forbid something wrong, return a greeting, or say tashmīt (saying: may Allah show mercy to you) to someone who has sneezed.
  2. Excluded from this is a person who speaks to the Imām or the Imām speaks to him.
  3. It is permissible to speak between the two sermons if needed.
  4. If mention of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is made while the Imām is delivering the sermon, you should invoke Allah's blessings upon him inaudibly. The same holds for saying 'amen' after supplications.

Whoever takes a bath on Friday, like the bath taken from sexual impurity, and then goes (to the mosque) is like the one who offers a camel as a sacrifice

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, like the bath taken from sexual impurity, and then goes (to the mosque) is like the one who offers a camel as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the second hour is like the one who offers a cow as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the third hour is like the one who offers a horned ram as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the fourth hour is like the one who offers a chicken as a sacrifice; and whoever goes at the fifth hour is like one who offers an egg as a sacrifice. When the Imām comes out, the angels come to listen to the Dhikr."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) tells about the merit of going early to the Friday prayer. Earliness starts from sunrise to the coming of the Imām. This is five hours, to be divided into five parts across the time from the rise of the sun to the entering of Imām and ascending the pulpit to deliver the sermon: First: He who takes a complete bath, like the one taken after sexual impurity, and then goes to the mosque on Friday at the first hour is like the one who gives a camel in charity. Second: He who goes at the second hour is like the one who gives a cow in charity. Third: He who goes at the third hour is like the one who gives a horned ram - a male sheep - in charity. Fourth: He who goes at the fourth hour is like the one who gives a chicken in charity. Fifth: He who goes at the fifth hour is like the one who gives an egg in charity. When the Imām comes out, the angels standing at the doors stop recording the names of those who enter the mosque and come to listen to the Dhikr and sermon.

Benefits
  1. The Hadīth urges us to bathe on Friday, before going to the prayer.
  2. It highlights the merit of going early to the Friday prayer at the first part of the daytime.
  3. It urges us to hasten to perform righteous deeds.
  4. The angels attend the Friday prayer and listen to the sermon.
  5. Angels stand at the doors of mosques, writing down the names of those coming to the Friday prayer, in order as per their arrival.
  6. Ibn Rajab said: His words "Whoever takes a bath on Friday and then goes" indicate that the time of the recommended bath for Friday starts from dawn and ends upon going to the Friday prayer.

'Whoever of you comes to attend the Friday prayer, let him take a shower

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever of you comes to attend the Friday prayer, let him take a shower."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) affirms that it is recommended for whoever wants to attend the Friday prayer to take a shower like that which he takes from Janābah (major ritual impurity).

Benefits
  1. Affirming the Friday Ghusl (ritual bath) and the fact that it is Sunnah for the believer on Friday, preferably just before going to the prayer.
  2. Keenness on being clean and having a pleasant smell is among the Muslim's morals and manners, and this is more emphatic when meeting and sitting with people, especially during the Friday and congregational prayers.
  3. The Hadīth addresses those upon whom the Friday prayer is obligatory because they are the ones who attend it.
  4. It is recommended for the one who attends the Friday prayer to be clean. So, he should take a bath to remove the foul odors from his body, and he should wear perfume. However, if he makes ablution only, it will be sufficient for him.

We used to perform the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and leave at a time when the walls had no shadow that we could take as shelter

Salāmah ibn al-Akwa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) who was amongst those who had given the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet beneath the Tree, reported: We used to perform the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and leave at a time when the walls had no shadow for us to take shelter in. Another wording reads: "We used to perform the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) after the sun had passed the meridian, then we would return and try to find shadow."
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

Salāmah ibn al-Akwa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that they used to attend the Friday prayer with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). They used to perform it early to the extent that they would listen to the two sermons, finish the prayer, and go home at a time when the walls had no enough shadow for them to take shelter in. The second version of the Hadīth states that they used to perform the Friday prayer with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) after the sun passes the meridian then they would return to their homes. Scholars have agreed that the due time of the Friday prayer ends at the same time Zhuhr prayer ends. It is preferable, though, to perform that prayer after the sun passes the meridian because this is what the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to do most of the time. Scholars also unanimously agree on that time. However, it is permissible to perform that prayer just before the sun passes the meridian in case there is a need for that, like in extremely hot weather and there is no shadow to take shelter in, or when people want to set out for Jihad before or around the meridian time.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons while standing, and he would separate them by sitting

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons between which he used to sit. Another narration reported by Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reads: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons while standing, and he would separate them by sitting."
Al-Bayhaqi - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeSahih/Authentic with its two versions
Explanation

Friday is a large all-inclusive gathering for the people of a town, and that is why, out of his wisdom, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons on Friday to direct the people towards good and warn them against evil. He used to give the two sermons while standing on the pulpit in order to be more eloquent in teaching and reminding them, in addition to the fact that standing displays the strength and splendor of Islam. When he concluded the first sermon, he would sit for a short while in order to rest, thereby separating the first sermon from the second. Then he would stand and give the second sermon; (he did this) so that the orator would not tire and the listeners would not become bored.

I used to pray with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his prayer was moderate in length and his sermon was moderate in length

Abu ‘Abdullāh Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I used to pray with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his prayer was moderate in length and his sermon was moderate in length.
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The Prophet's prayer and sermon were not overly long or brief. Yet, they were moderate, being performed and given by the role model for Muslims in general and for Imāms and preachers in particular. So, no one should cite this Hadīth as evidence that the prayer and sermon may take place very quickly, for the Prophet's guidance points to moderation, and sometimes prolongation that causes no boredom.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Hibwah (a sitting position) on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon

Mu‘ādh ibn Anas al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Hibwah (a sitting position) on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon.
Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by AhmadGradeGood hadith
Explanation

This Hadīth is abrogated as Abu Dawūd pointed out. The meaning of it is as related by Mu‘ādh ibn Anas from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who forbade Hibwah on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon. Hibwah means sitting with the thighs drawn up to the belly and the calves to the thighs, held together by the arms, a belt, a turban, etc. This was forbidden by the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when the Imām is delivering the Friday sermon, for two reasons: 1. Hibwah might cause one to fall asleep and sleep through the sermon. 2. The ‘Awrah might become exposed, because most of the [ancient] Arabs only wore one piece of clothing, so sitting in this way might expose their ‘Awrah. An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy upon him) comments: “Hibwah was a common practice among Arabs in their gatherings. If sitting this way uncovers a part of one's ‘Awrah, it is forbidden.” However, if there is no such a risk, then Hibwah is fine, because the prohibition was for a specific reason and if that reason that no longer exists, the prohibition is removed. We also know from a Hadīth that ‘Abbād ibn Tamīm reported from his uncle who said “I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) lying on his back in the mosque with one of his legs over the other."

Whoever performs ablution on Friday, that is good, and whoever takes a bath has done what is better

Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution on Friday, that is good, and whoever takes a bath has done what is better."
Narrated by Ibn Majah - Narrated by At-Termedhy - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by Ahmad - Ad-DaarimiGradeGood hadith
Explanation

Whoever performs ablution for the Friday prayer, then he has followed the Sunnah and taken advantage of the concession in this regard, and that is a good thing and what he did is praised. But whoever takes a bath is doing something better, meaning that taking a bath before the Friday prayer is better in terms of reward than only making ablution without bathing. This is the opinion that the majority of scholars have chosen, including the four Imāms, and among the proofs they use also is the Hadīth narrated by Muslim: "Whoever makes ablution in a perfect manner then goes to the Friday Prayer and listens attentively (to the sermon), the sins that he committed between the two Fridays will be forgiven for him, and an additional three days as well."
