Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Straighten your rows, for indeed, straightening the row is from the perfection of the prayer."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commands those who perform the prayer to straighten their rows, not being forward or backward from the row, and that straightening the rows is part of the completion and perfection of the prayer, whereas the crookedness of the row is a flaw and deficiency in the prayer.
Benefits
- Permissibility of paying attention to whatever leads to perfecting the prayer and keeps it far from deficiency.
- Wisdom of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in teaching as he joined the ruling with its cause to clarify the rationale behind the legislation and encourage people to comply.

‘Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saw a person sitting aloof and not praying with the people. He asked him: "O so and so, what prevented you from offering the prayer with the people?" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah, I am ritually impure and there is no water." In response, the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should use clean earth, and that will be sufficient for you."
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) led his Companions in the Fajr prayer. When he finished the prayer, he noticed a man that had not prayed with them. Out of his remarkable gentleness and good call to Allah, the Almighty, he did not rebuke the man for having failed to attend the congregational prayer until he could know the reason behind this. So, he asked the man: “O so-and-so, what prevented you from praying with the congregation?” The man clarified his excuse, according to his reasoning. He said that he was in a state of ritual impurity and had no water; that is why he delayed the prayer until he could find water and purify himself therewith. Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed him that Allah, the Almighty, out of His kindness, provided a replacement for water when it comes to purification; and that is clean earth. He told him to use it instead of water, which was unavailable.

We stayed with him for twenty nights. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was merciful and compassionate; so, he realized our longing for our families. He asked us about our families whom we had left behind and we told him about them. Thereupon, he said: "Go back to your families and stay with them. Teach them (religion) and command them (to adhere to it), perform so-and-so prayer at so-and-so time, and when prayer becomes due, let one of you call the Adhān and let the oldest among you lead you in prayer."
Another version by Al-Bukhāri has this addition: "Pray as you saw me pray.”
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when we were young and of about the same age.” That was in the Year of Delegations, 9 A.H. They were young men and they stayed with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) for twenty nights.
They came to him to learn the religion of Allah. Mālik said: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was merciful and compassionate. He realized our longing for our families. He asked us about our families whom we had left behind and we told him about them. Thereupon, he said: "Go back to your people and stay with them. Teach them (religion) and command them (to adhere to it), pray so-and-so prayer at so-and-so time, and when prayer becomes due, let one of you pronounce the Adhān and let the eldest among you lead you in prayer."
Another version by Al-Bukhāri adds: “Pray as you saw me pray.”
This indicates that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was famous for his mercy and compassion. He was the most merciful and the most compassionate among people towards people. When he perceived their longing for their families and asked them about their people whom they had left behind and they informed him about them, he ordered them to return home.
"And let the eldest among you lead you in prayer" points out that older one should take precedence when it comes to leading prayer. And by the way, this does not contradict the Prophet’s statement: "Let the best reciter of the Book of Allah among the people lead them in prayer.” This is because these young men came to the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at the same time and apparently there was no significant difference between them in terms of the Qur’an’s recitation. Hence, he said: "And let the eldest among you lead you in prayer", because they were equal, or almost equal, in reciting the Qur’an. If they were the same in terms of reciting the Qur’an, knowledge of the Sunnah, and making the Hijrah, then the eldest among them should take precedence and lead the prayer.
His statement "Pray as you saw me pray" confirms the fact that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach people their religion by words and deeds. For example, he taught the man who offered prayer hastily, saying: "When you get up to pray, perform ablution perfectly, stand facing the Qiblah, make Takbīr, recite some of what you memorize of the Qur’an, and then bow down."
In the case of those young men, he chose to teach by deeds.

An-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Straighten your rows or Allah will cause dissension amongst you.''
In another narration: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten our rows, as if he was straightening arrows, until he saw that we had learned it from him. One day he came out, stood for prayer and was about to say 'Allah Akbar' (to start the prayer) when he saw a man whose chest was bulging out from the row. So he said: 'Slaves of Allah, either you straighten your rows or Allah will cause dissension amongst you.'"
Narrated by Muslim - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized that if the rows are not straightened in the prayer, Allah will cause dissension amongst the worshippers, thus making them turn their faces away from each other. This occurs when some of them step forward and leave gaps in the rows.
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach his companions with his words and actions. He straightened them with his hands until he thought that they had learned. Then in a prayer, he saw one of his companions with his chest sticking out from the row. This made him angry and he said: ''Straighten your rows, or Allah will cause dissension amongst you.''

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is he who raises his head before the Imam not afraid that Allah may transform his head into that of a donkey or his shape into that of a donkey?"
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarifies the serious threat to the one who raises his head in prayer before his Imam, as Allah may transform his head into that of a donkey or transform his shape into that of a donkey.
Benefits
- There are four conditions for a person led in prayer in relation to the Imam, three of which are prohibited and they are: making a movement before the Imam, making a movement simultaneously with the Imam, and delaying in following the Imam. The prescribed condition; however, is: acting immediately after the Imam.
- It is obligatory for the one led in prayer to follow the Imam.
- The threat to transform the shape of the one who raises his head before the Imam to that of a donkey is possible and is a form of deformation.

I dismounted and let the female donkey loose to graze and I joined the row and none objected to that.
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that once he was with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) at Mina during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and he came riding a female donkey. He passed in front of part of the row while the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was leading his Companions in prayer with no wall in front of him. Ibn ‘Abbās thus dismounted and let the female donkey loose to graze and he joined the row. At that time, as he reported, he was about to attain the age of puberty. This means that he reached an age in which he should have been blamed if he had done something wrong that would invalidate others' prayer. However, neither the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) nor any of his Companions objected to what he had done.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessing be upon him) stood up and the orphan and I stood in a row behind him, and the elderly woman stood behind us. He led us praying two Rak‘ahs, then he left. Explanation
Mulaykah (may Allah be pleased with her) invited the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to come and eat some food that she had prepared. Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, had created him with a propensity for the highest character and morals, such as abundant humility. Despite his lofty rank and high status, he accepted invitations from the old and the young, men and women, and the rich and the poor, intending high objectives and lofty goals, such as: consoling the hearts of the miserable, humility towards the poor, teaching the unlearned, and other praiseworthy goals. He accepted the invitation of this hostess and ate some of her food. He took this opportunity to teach those weaker individuals who may not be able to jostle with the others in attending his blessed gatherings. He told them to stand up so he could lead them in the prayer and they could learn from him how to pray. Anas brought an old reed mat that had turned black from prolonged use and washed it with water. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood upon it and led them in prayer. He made Anas and an orphan that was with him stand in a row behind him, and the elderly lady – the hostess – stand in a row behind Anas and the orphan and pray with them. he led them in two Rak‘ahs and then left, after fulfilling his duties of Da‘wah and teaching. May Allah bless us with following his actions and morals!

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I have never prayed behind an Imām who was more brief and more perfect in prayer than the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to command people to adopt facilitation, and he used to invite them to that by words and actions. An aspect of facilitation is shortening the prayer while, at the same time, giving the act of worship its due right of completion and perfection. Anas ibn Mālik stated that he never prayed behind an Imām whose prayer was shorter than that of the great Imām, Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) due to his making things easier for those praying behind him so that they would not leave the prayer while wishing to complete it. At the same time, no prayer was more perfect than that of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) who used to perform it in the most perfect and complete manner, without neglecting any part; rather, he would perfect it by performing what is obligatory and what is recommended, and this was from the effects of his blessing.
