Recommended Manners of the Ritual Bath

3 ḥadīths

Whoever takes a bath on Friday, like the bath taken from sexual impurity, and then goes (to the mosque) is like the one who offers a camel as a sacrifice

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, like the bath taken from sexual impurity, and then goes (to the mosque) is like the one who offers a camel as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the second hour is like the one who offers a cow as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the third hour is like the one who offers a horned ram as a sacrifice; whoever goes at the fourth hour is like the one who offers a chicken as a sacrifice; and whoever goes at the fifth hour is like one who offers an egg as a sacrifice. When the Imām comes out, the angels come to listen to the Dhikr."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) tells about the merit of going early to the Friday prayer. Earliness starts from sunrise to the coming of the Imām. This is five hours, to be divided into five parts across the time from the rise of the sun to the entering of Imām and ascending the pulpit to deliver the sermon: First: He who takes a complete bath, like the one taken after sexual impurity, and then goes to the mosque on Friday at the first hour is like the one who gives a camel in charity. Second: He who goes at the second hour is like the one who gives a cow in charity. Third: He who goes at the third hour is like the one who gives a horned ram - a male sheep - in charity. Fourth: He who goes at the fourth hour is like the one who gives a chicken in charity. Fifth: He who goes at the fifth hour is like the one who gives an egg in charity. When the Imām comes out, the angels standing at the doors stop recording the names of those who enter the mosque and come to listen to the Dhikr and sermon.

Benefits
  1. The Hadīth urges us to bathe on Friday, before going to the prayer.
  2. It highlights the merit of going early to the Friday prayer at the first part of the daytime.
  3. It urges us to hasten to perform righteous deeds.
  4. The angels attend the Friday prayer and listen to the sermon.
  5. Angels stand at the doors of mosques, writing down the names of those coming to the Friday prayer, in order as per their arrival.
  6. Ibn Rajab said: His words "Whoever takes a bath on Friday and then goes" indicate that the time of the recommended bath for Friday starts from dawn and ends upon going to the Friday prayer.

I went to ‘Ā’ishah and asked her to describe to me the Messenger's illness. ‘Ā’ishah said: Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied: No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you

‘Ubaydullāh ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Utbah reported: I went to ‘Ā’ishah and asked her to describe to me the Messenger's illness. ‘Ā’ishah said: "Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied: 'No, O Messenger of Allah! They are waiting for you.' He added: 'Put water for me in a trough.'" ‘Ā’ishah added: "We did so. He took a bath and tried to get up but fainted. When he recovered, he again asked whether the people had prayed. We said: 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah!' He again said: 'Put water in a trough for me.' He sat down and took a bath and tried to get up but fainted again. Then he recovered and said: 'Have the people prayed?' We replied: 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Put water for me in the trough.' Then he sat down and washed himself and tried to get up but he fainted. When he recovered, he asked: 'Have the people prayed?' We said: 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah! The people were in the mosque waiting for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) for the ‘Ishā' prayer. The Prophet sent for Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. The Prophet's messenger went to Abu Bakr and said: 'The Messenger orders you to lead the people in the prayer.' Abu Bakr was a softhearted man, so he asked ‘Umar to lead the prayer but ‘Umar replied: 'You are more rightful.' So Abu Bakr led the prayer in those days. When the Prophet felt a bit better, he came out for the Zhuhr prayer with the help of two persons one of whom was Al-‘Abbās, while Abu Bakr was leading the people in the prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to retreat but the Prophet beckoned him not to do so and asked them to make him sit beside Abu Bakr and they did so. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet (in the prayer) and the people were following Abu Bakr. The Prophet (prayed) sitting." ‘Ubaydullāh added: "I went to ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās and said: 'Shall I tell you what ‘Ā’ishah has told me about the fatal illness of the Prophet?' Ibn ‘Abbās said: 'Go ahead.' I told him her narration and he did not deny anything of it but asked whether ‘Ā’ishah told me the name of the second person (who helped the Prophet along with Al-‘Abbās. I said. 'No.' He said: 'He was ‘Ali (ibn Abi Tālib).'"

Explanation

This noble Hadīth illustrates some of what happened during the Prophet's last illness. It specifically relates that when the Prophet became so ill, he asked those around him as to whether the people had prayed, and the reply came in the negative, and so he asked for a vessel, made ablution, yet fainted. When he regained his consciousness, he asked again and made ablution, yet fainted once more. This occurred for three times, after which he ordered that Abu Bakr lead the people in prayer. When he received the Prophet's messenger with this order, Abu Bakr asked ‘Umar to lead the people in prayer, but he refused and made Abu Bakr come forward, for he was more worthy of that. Then, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) felt better, and so he came out being supported by Al-‘Abbās and ‘Ali. In the meantime, Abu Bakr was leading the people in Zhuhr prayer. When he saw the Prophet, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet pointed to him to remain in his place and he sat next to him. Thus, Abu Bakr was following the Prophet in the prayer, and the people were following Abu Bakr.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) from Janābah (major ritual impurity) using one Sā‘ of water, and he would perform Wudū’ (ablution) with one Mudd

Safīnah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) from Janābah (major ritual impurity) using one Sā‘ of water, and he would perform Wudū’ (ablution) with one Mudd.
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to take a bath from Janābah with one Sā‘ and perform ablution with one Mudd. One Sā‘ equals four Mudds, and one Mudd is the amount that would fill the palms of an average-sized person.

Benefits
  1. It is prescribed to use water moderately for ablution and ritual bathing and not to use it wastefully, even if water is abundant.
  2. It is recommended to use little water for ablution and ritual baths, as needed. This is the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ).
  3. The bottom line is to perform ablution and ritual baths thoroughly while observing the relevant Sunnah acts and etiquettes, without extravagance or stinginess. One should take into account the time, the abundance or shortage of water, and so on.
  4. Janābah applies to anyone who has ejaculated or engaged in sexual intercourse. It was called as such because the one in a state of Janābah should keep away (Ijtināb) from prayer and other acts of worship until he is purified from it.
  5. Sā‘: a well-known measure. It refers to the Prophetic Sā‘, which weighs 480 Miskals of good wheat, or 3 liters.
  6. Mudd: a Shar‘i unit of measurement, which is the handfuls of a moderate person when he fills both hands and extends them. Mudd is a quarter of a Sā‘, by consensus among the scholars, and it equals 750 milliliters.
