Causes of Obligatory Ritual Bath

3 ḥadīths

If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, the ritual bath becomes obligatory

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself (by having sexual intercourse with her), the ritual bath becomes obligatory." Another version adds: "even if he does not ejaculate."
Narrated by Muslim - Narrated by Bukhari & MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

If a man sits between a woman's four limbs, i.e. her arms and legs, and he inserts his male organ into her vagina, then it is obligatory on both of them to take a ritual bath in order to remove the major ritual impurity even if no semen is discharged. Penetration on its own necessitates ritual bath.

O Messenger of Allah, if a man parts from his wife suddenly (during sexual intercourse) without discharging semen, what will he be required to do? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is water (seminal discharge) that makes water (ritual bath) obligatory

Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went to Qubā’ with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on Monday. On reaching (the locale of) Banu Sālim, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood at ‘Itbān’s door and called out to him loudly. He came out dragging his lower garment. When he saw that, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We made the man hurry." ‘Itbān said: "O Messenger of Allah, if a man parts from his wife suddenly (during sexual intercourse) without discharging semen, what will he be required to do?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is water (seminal discharge) that makes water (ritual bath) obligatory."

Explanation

This Hadīth that was reported by Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri indicates that ritual bath becomes obligatory after ejaculation. The first 'water' mentioned in the Hadīth refers to seminal fluid, whereas the second "water" refers to water that is commonly known. The Hadīth indicates that the obligation of ritual bath is restricted to ejaculation and that no ritual bath is due when the two circumcised parts meet. However, this ruling was abrogated and ritual bath has become obligatory when sexual intercourse takes place, even if there is no ejaculation. This is proven by this Hadīth: "If the two circumcised parts meet, ritual bath becomes obligatory."

I came to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) with the intention of embracing Islam. He commanded me to take a bath with water and the leaves of a lote tree

عن قيس بن عاصم رضي الله عنه قال: أتيتُ النبيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُريدُ الإسلامَ، فأَمَرَني أن أغتَسِلَ بماءٍ وسِدرٍ.
Qays ibn ‘Āsim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) with the intention of embracing Islam. He commanded me to take a bath with water and the leaves of a lote tree.
Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasā’iGradeAuthentic
Explanation

Qays ibn 'Āsim came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with the intention to embrace Islam. So, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him to bathe with water and lote tree leaves, which are used for cleaning and have a good scent.

Benefits
  1. It is prescribed for a disbeliever who wants to enter Islam to take a bath.
  2. Islam is honorable and careful about both the body and the spirit.
  3. Mixing water with other pure materials does not affect its state of purification.
  4. Modern detergents, like soap, can take the place of the lote trees.
