Blameworthy Morals

47 ḥadīths

When Allah gathers the first and the last on the Day of Judgment, a banner will be raised for every traitor, and it will be said: This is the betrayal of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah gathers the first and the last on the Day of Judgment, a banner will be raised for every traitor, and it will be said: This is the betrayal of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that on the Day of Judgment, when Allah Almighty gathers the first and the last for the reckoning, He will set up a sign for every traitor who failed to fulfill a covenant he made, whether with Allah or with people. This sign will expose his betrayal, and he will be called out on that day: This is the betrayal of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so, to expose the evil of his deed before the people of the Gathering.

Benefits
  1. The prohibition of treachery, and that it is one of the major sins because of this severe warning associated with it.
  2. The betrayal that incurs a severe warning includes anyone who entrusts you with life, honor, secret, or wealth, and you betray him, breaking his trust in your reliability.
  3. Al-Qurtubi said: This is an address from him to the Arabs who used to practice, as they used to raise a white banner for loyalty and a black banner for betrayal, to blame and condemn the traitor. The Hadīth implies that something similar will occur for the betrayer, so he will be known for his trait on the Day of Judgment and condemned by the people of the Gathering.
  4. Ibn Hajar said: This indicates that people will be called on the Day of Judgment by their fathers, as mentioned in his statement: "This is the betrayal of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so.".

Shall I inform you of the gravest of the major sins?

Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I inform you of the gravest of the major sins?" He repeated this three times. They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Associating partners with Allah and undutifulness to parents." He was reclining and then sat up and said: "And indeed, the false statement." He repeated it so many times that we wished he would stop.
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed his Companions about the gravest of the major sins and mentioned these three: 1. Associating partners with Allah: This is to devote any form of worship to other than Allah and regard anyone as equal to Allah in His divinity, lordship, names, and attributes. 2. Undutifulness to parents: This is any hurt to one's parents, whether by word or deed, and not showing kindness to them. 3. False statement, which includes perjury: Every false and untrue statement intended to detract from the one about whom it is made by taking his property, damaging his honor, and the like. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the warning about the false testimony to highlight its hideousness and evil consequences for society, so much that the Companions wished that he would be quiet out of compassion towards him and disliking what would annoy him.

Benefits
  1. The gravest sin is associating partners with Allah, as he puts it at the forefront of the major sins and the greatest one among them. This is confirmed by the verse: {Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but forgives anything less than that for whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin.}
  2. The rights of parents are significant, as he coupled them with the rights of Allah Almighty.
  3. Sins are divided into major and minor. Major sins are every sin that entails a worldly penalty, like the prescribed punishments and curses, or a threat regarding the Hereafter, such as the threat of entering Hellfire. There are different levels of major sins, some of which are more severe than others in terms of prohibition. Minor sins are the sins other than the major ones.

They are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a major sin. One of them would not save himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to walk about spreading malicious gossip

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said: "They are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a major sin. One of them would not save himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to walk about spreading malicious gossip." He then took a green leaf of a date palm, split it into two, and planted one on each grave. They said: O Messenger of Allah, why did you do that? He replied: "Their torment might be alleviated until they become dry."
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said: The two buried in these graves are being tormented but not for something that you would consider significant, although it is significant in the sight of Allah. One of them used to be heedless of keeping his body and clothes clean from the traces of urine when relieving himself, while the other used to spread slander among people, transferring others' talk with the intention of causing harm, dissension, and enmity among them.

Benefits
  1. Talebearing and heedlessness in shielding oneself from urine are major sins and a cause for punishment in the grave.
  2. Allah Almighty revealed part of the unseen, such as the torment of the grave, as a sign of his prophethood.
  3. The act of splitting the two date palm leaves and putting them on the grave is unique to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) because Allah informed him of the condition of the two buried in that grave. Therefore, none should be compared to him (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) because none is aware of the conditions of the dead.

The bankrupt in my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, fasting and Zakah, but since he hurled abuse at others, accused others of committing adultery without evidence, unlawfully consumed the wealth of others, and shed the blood of others and beat others, his good deeds will be credited to the accounts of others (who suffered at his hands)

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “‘Do you know who is the bankrupt?" They said: "The bankrupt among us is the one who has neither money nor property." He said: "The bankrupt in my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Judgment with prayer, fasting and Zakat, but since he hurled abuse at others, accused others of committing adultery without evidence, unlawfully consumed the wealth of others, and shed the blood of others and beat others, his good deeds will be credited to the accounts of others (who suffered at his hands), and if his good deeds fall short to clear his account, others' sins will be cast on him and he will then be thrown in the Fire."
Narrated by MuslimGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): Do you know who is the bankrupt? They gave him the expected answer, which is that the bankrupt is the poor person who has no wealth or property. He then told them that the bankrupt in this nation (of Muslims) is the one who comes on the Day of Judgment with abundant good deeds, such as praying, fasting, and giving charity; but with an account of bad deeds like insulting others, beating others, consuming others’ wealth without right, accusing others of committing immoral acts, and killing others. All of them will seek retribution, for whatever rights they do not receive in the life of this world they will receive in the Hereafter. So, retribution will be exacted against him and each of them will take some of his good deeds. If his good deeds are not enough to settle the score, then some of their own evil deeds will be cast on him then he will be thrown in the fire of Hell.

“Avoid the seven destructive sins

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Avoid the seven destructive sins” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He said: “Associating partners with Allah; magic (sorcery); killing a person whose killing Allah has prohibited except by legal right; consuming usury; devouring the property of an orphan; fleeing from the battlefield; and slandering chaste, innocent, and believing women.”
Agreed uponGradeAuthentic
Explanation

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commands his Ummah to shun seven ruinous crimes and sins. When asked about them, he outlined them as the following: First: associating partners with Allah by taking anyone or anything as a peer and equal to Him and by devoting any act of worship to other than Allah Almighty. He began with polytheism because it is the gravest sin. Second: magic, which includes knots, incantations, treatments, and making smoke, affects the bewitched person's body, causing him to die or fall ill, or it causes separation between husband and wife. It is the work of the devil and mostly cannot be performed except through polytheism and pleasing the evil spirits by doing any of the things they like. Third: killing a person whose killing Allah has prohibited except by a legal cause implemented by the ruler. Fourth: consuming usury by taking it or any other form of benefit. Fifth: encroaching upon the property of a child whose father died before he reaches puberty. Sixth: fleeing the battle with the disbelievers. Seventh: accusing chaste and noble women of adultery, as well as accusing men.

Benefits
  1. Major sins are not limited to seven, but these seven are singled out due to their graveness and danger.
  2. It is permissible to kill a person in legal retribution, for apostasy, or for committing adultery after getting married, with this being carried out by the legitimate ruler.

Sulaymān ibn Surad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was sitting with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when two men started to insult each other, and the face of one of them turned red and his jugular veins got swollen. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Verily, I know a word; if he said it, his rage would go away. If he said: I seek refuge with Allah from the devil, his rage would go away." They said to him: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the devil." Thereupon he said: Am I mad?

Explanation

Two men cursed and insulted each other in the presence of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), and the face of one of them turned red and the veins surrounding his neck became swollen. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, I know a word; if this angry man said it, his anger would go away. If he said: I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil. They said to him: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Seek refuge with Allah from the devil. Thereupon he said: Am I mad? thinking that only the mad seek refuge with Allah from the devil.

Benefits
  1. Keenness of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on providing guidance and instruction when there is a reason for it.
  2. Anger is from the devil.
  3. The command to seek refuge with Allah from the devil when angry, as Allah Almighty says: {If you are tempted by Satan, seek refuge with Allah...}
  4. Warning against abuse and curses and criticizing them because they lead to hostilities between people.
  5. Advice should be conveyed to those who did not hear it so that they would benefit from it.
  6. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned against anger because it leads to evil and recklessness, and he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) never got angry unless the prohibitions of Allah Almighty were violated, which is praiseworthy anger.
  7. Commenting on "Do you see any madness in me?"  An-Nawawi said: It is probable that the sayer was from the hypocrites or the rude Bedouins.

From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say

Wāthilah ibn al-Asqa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say."
Narrated by BukhariGradeAuthentic hadith
Explanation

From the worst of lies in Allah's sight is that a man ascribes himself to someone who is not his biological father, or that someone else ascribes a man to other than his biological father and that man approves of such ascription. This is indeed a monstrous falsehood. Also from the worst types of lying in Allah's sight is that a person claims that he saw something in a dream which he never really saw. Another grave and severe type of lie in Allah's sight is to ascribe to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) something that he never said: did, or approved of.

You have said a word that, if it were mixed with the water of the sea, it would taint it

‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): Sufficient for you that Safiyyah is such-and-such, —one of the narrators said: She meant "short"—so he said: "You have said a word that, if it were mixed with the water of the sea, it would taint it." She said: And I mimicked a person for him, and he said: "I would not like to mimic a person, even if I were given such-and-such."
Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, and AhmadGradeAuthentic
Explanation

‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) said to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): Sufficient for you that Safiyyah—meaning the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her)—one of her physical defects was that she was short. So he replied: You have said a word that, if it were mixed with the water of the sea, would overwhelm, alter, and spoil it. She added: And I mimicked someone disparagingly. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then said: I would not be pleased to speak of anyone's fault, nor to mimic his actions or words disparagingly, even if I were given a great deal of worldly wealth for it.

Benefits
  1. Warning and deterring against backbiting.
  2. Imitating others' appearances or actions in a way that belittles or demeans them is considered forbidden backbiting.
  3. Describing others' physical flaws is a form of backbiting.
  4. Al-Qādi said: "Mixing" means blending and altering by adding something else to it. The meaning here is that if this backbiting were something that could be mixed with the sea, it would change its state, despite the sea's vastness and abundance. So how much more would it affect a limited amount of deeds if mixed with them?
  5. Clarifying some of the jealousy that can occur between wives.
  6. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not approve of evil.
  7. Pointing out the insignificance of worldly matters compared to the pleasure of Allah Almighty and avoiding His displeasure.
  8. Islam is the religion of good morals, and it commands the protection of people's honor from being violated by words or actions, as such behavior breeds enmity and hatred among Muslims.
