This is a translation of Tafsīr as-Saʿdī as IslamHouse.com publishes it at saadi.islamenc.com, read from that site’s pages. قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كُنَّا سَـٰرِقِينَ 73
(73) Братья поклялись, что не собирались совершать на египетской земле безза- коние, потому что воровство является одним из величайших проявлений без- закония. Они принесли клятву на основании своих знаний. Они знали, что ни один из братьев не был вором и нечестивцем, потому что прежде они про- шли через испытания, подтвердившие их добропорядочность и набожность. Более того, люди, которые обвинили их в воровстве, также прекрасно знали об их добропорядочности. И возражение братьев можно назвать очень убеди- тельным, ведь гораздо менее убедительными были бы слова: «Мы не соверша- ли беззакония и не воровали».
